Colca Canyon, one of the deepest in the world, enchants with breathtaking Andean landscapes, relaxing hot springs, and charming villages like Chivay. Above all, experience the awe-inspiring flight of the condor at the famous Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint.
Our Colca Canyon experience begins early with a pick-up from your hotel in Arequipa, heading toward one of the deepest canyons in the world. Along the way, we’ll pass through stunning landscapes and visit the Pampa Cañahuas Reserve, where you can see vicuñas and llamas. We’ll stop at Patahuasi for a high-altitude tea and enjoy the Pampa de Tocra, perfect for birdwatching. Next, we’ll reach Patapampa to admire the Misti, Chachani, and Ampato volcanoes. Finally, we’ll arrive in Chivay for lunch at a local restaurant before taking you to your accommodation to rest. You can also relax in La Calera hot springs or visit the Collaguas Museum at your leisure.
On our second day, we’ll start early to visit the famous Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint, where you can witness the majestic flight of the Andean condor, a sacred symbol of the Andes. If you wish, you can take a short optional walk to enjoy even more of the stunning canyon views. We’ll then explore nearby picturesque villages, rich in history and natural beauty, including the charming town of Maca, before arriving in Chivay for a traditional lunch. Finally, we’ll return to Arequipa, taking with you unforgettable memories of this magical Colca Canyon journey.
Your adventure begins very early in the morning (generally between 6:00 a.m. and 6:30 a.m.) with direct pickup from your hotel in Arequipa. The early start is necessary to arrive on time at the Cruz del Cóndor on Day 2 and to make the most of the panoramic views on Day 1.
Yes, the stops are a key part of the experience. On Day 1, we visit the Pampa Cañahuas Reserve (to see Andean camelids like vicuñas and llamas), Pampa de Tocra (for birdwatching), and Patapampa (the highest point with views of the Misti, Chachani, and Ampato volcanoes). These stops also serve to help you progressively acclimate to the altitude.
The tour reaches significant altitudes (over 4,900 m.a.s.l. / 16,076 ft. at Patapampa). For safety, the route is designed with several stops. We pause at Patahuasi, where you can have coca tea. We strongly recommend acclimatizing for at least one day in Arequipa (2,335 m.a.s.l. / 7,661 ft.) before starting this tour.
The overnight stay is in the town of Chivay, the main service center of the Colca Canyon. The tour price includes one night in a 3-star lodge (optional: you can choose the accommodation category that suits you best when making your reservation).
All entrance tickets are included in the published price, as well as two lunches (Day 1 in Chivay and Day 2 after the Cruz del Cóndor). Dinner expenses, as well as entrance fees to the La Calera Hot Springs or the Collaguas Museum, are personal leisure activities and are not included.
We visit the Cruz del Cóndor viewpoint very early on the morning of Day 2, which is the best time to witness the majestic flight of these Andean birds. The condor is a wild species; while we cannot guarantee a 100% sighting, the probability at this specific point is maximum.
This tour primarily focuses on scenery and observation, so its physical difficulty is low. The walks are optional and short (e.g., 30 to 45 minutes at the Cruz del Cóndor) for those who wish to explore the canyon rim a little more. The rest of the time is spent traveling or visiting villages.
