Rainbow Mountain, or Vinicunca, dazzles with vibrant mineral colors, sacred Andean energy and stunning views of Ausangate, a true Peruvian icon.
Our adventure to the Rainbow Mountain begins early, with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We’ll travel in a tourist vehicle through beautiful valleys and stunning Andean landscapes until we reach the village of Cusipata, where a delicious breakfast prepared with local ingredients awaits us. Then, we’ll continue along a dirt road to the starting point of the hike.
The trek to the summit takes approximately two to two and a half hours. Along the way, you’ll admire herds of alpacas, snow-capped peaks, and the majestic Ausangate, considered a sacred mountain by locals. The weather in this region can change quickly, so it’s recommended to dress in layers (up to three), wear sunscreen, and protect your hands from cold or sunlight.
At the top, Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) will amaze you with its vibrant shades of red, yellow, green, and purple. After enjoying the view and taking photos, we’ll return to Cusipata for a delicious lunch before heading back to Cusco.
The day begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We will travel through beautiful Andean valleys to the town of Cusipata, where you will enjoy a delicious breakfast made with local ingredients. Afterward, we continue to the trailhead to begin the hike.
Once we reach and explore Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain), we return to Cusipata for a hearty lunch before heading back to Cusco in the afternoon.
The uphill hike to the summit takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. It is considered moderate to challenging, mainly because of the high altitude (5,000 m / 16,400 ft). While the slope is not extreme, the physical effort required at this elevation is significant.
Along the trail, you’ll enjoy views of alpaca and llama herds, stunning snow-capped peaks, and the impressive Ausangate Mountain, considered sacred by local communities. At the summit, Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) will amaze you with its vibrant natural stripes of red, yellow, green, and purple.
Absolutely. Due to the extreme altitude of this hike, it is essential to spend at least 2 to 3 days in Cusco or another high-altitude location beforehand. This allows your body to adjust properly and reduces the risk of altitude sickness.
The summit of Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) sits at approximately 5,200 m.a.s.l. (17,060 feet) above sea level.
